Why is strength & conditioning important for Junior Athletes?

Have you ever realised a squat uses the same pattern and muscles we use to jump? That’s how strength and conditioning improves athletic performance.

We Coach fundamental movement patterns, vital to youth development, like a squat, lunge, push up, chin up and deadlift safely and effectively so your child starts feeling stronger on the court and reduces their chance of being injured.

Is weight training safe for kids?

Yes! We start off with body weight and broom stick variations and when athletes are ready - that is when they move effectively and safely, we start to add weights so that athletes continue to improve and progress.

Is the program specific to basketball?

Yes! The MT Athletic Performance Program is suited to their game! Strength and conditioning has basic fundamentals specific to every sport, however, as the program progresses, we will start adding different exercises that teach basketball specific movement patterns. A defensive slide isn’t really seen in any other sport, so we need to make sure we cater for basketball specific strengths!

My child already goes to the gym, is this program only for beginners?

No! This program will be specific to each athlete’s experience level. If your child has been training for a while now, we’ll progress them accordingly.

Is one session per week enough?

Yes. Basketball players are busy! They play and train 4-6 times a week. Due to this we’re starting with one session a week to make sure Melbourne Tigers athletes start to reap the benefits of strength and conditioning, without tiring them out. If you believe your child would benefit more from 2 sessions a week - please let us know.
